Re: lack of posts
I never have enough time to post / go on Tumblr when school is in session, so you’re much better off following me on Twitter for now: @sampurtill. I still love Tumblr and the great community here!! Currently on Thanksgiving break… ok, back to studying…

Voter Registration Drive a Massive Success
My friend and colleague John Haskell (ASSU Chief of Staff) just sent out an email to the people who helped his efforts with campus voter registration. Over 1,000 people registered and 3,000 people in a list who will get customized emails based on what state they’re registered to vote in :) This is a huge success and it feels so good to be part of such a great cause. John worked tirelessly...

A letter to Stanford students
Just received this email from a fellow Stanford student named Robin Thomas and felt compelled to repost… Here’s the text, verbatim: What’s your college degree going to give you? I mean the degree itself, the piece of paper. What will that get you? It’ll help you make more money later on, for one thing. It’ll get you a couple more interviews, open up a few more business...

Colin Powell’s 13 Rules of Life
It ain’t as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning. Get mad, and then get over it. Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it. It can be done! Be careful what you choose. You may get it. Don’t let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision. You can’t make...

G.M.’s Electric Lemon
‘making the bailout work at all costs’… Quantifying just how much taxpayer money will have been wasted on the hastily developed Volt is no easy feat. Start with the $50 billion bailout (without which none of this would have been necessary), add $240 million in Energy Department grants doled out to G.M. last summer, $150 million in federal money to the Volt’s Korean battery...

They told us how to simplify our lives, but we complicated them again. It is the paradox of the designer-as-revolutionary. He can give us the tools for easier living, but if we buy too many, or the wrong ones, it is still just stuff. Easier Living, by Design (via @nytimes)

Bill Clinton often says his greatest regret as president is that he didn’t do more to stop the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. There were signs that trouble was brewing long before the killing started, but when it did begin, Mr. Clinton and the international community did not act decisively. This is President Obama’s Rwanda moment, and it is unfolding now, in slow motion. It is not too late to prevent...

– The Runaway General | Rolling Stone One of the dozens of great quotes in the article responsible for today’s firing of General McChrystal. While I understand Obama’s decision, after reading the article I kind of wish that they kept McChrystal. His nickname is The Boss. He refers to...

Re: Utah inmate executed via firing squad this...
There was a Times article today about a death row inmate in Utah who was executed by a five person firing squad. A five-member firing squad lined up, they placed a target on the chest of the inmate (who committed absolutely heinous crimes, no doubt about that), and fired at him. I remember the description of the firing squad in Camus’ The Stranger I read about a year ago. While I’m...

North Korea football trivia
It’s been suggested that North Korea leader Kim Jong-Il gave the coach advice on how to reach the World Cup. Kim Jong-Su, the general secretary of the North Korean FA, has said the ‘Dear Leader’ gave “in-depth guidance” on how to develop the game in the country and the coach himself has claimed he received regular tactical advice during matches, apparently using...
